We use money to express our desires, needs, wants, yearnings, even our fears. Money has different meanings to different people: power, control, security, charity, freedom, success, status. Each of us comes to a marriage with a vision for the future, but it may be quite different from our partners. We may not have fully fleshed out all the hot spots like children, sex, in-laws, religion, holidays and vacations, education, where to live, lifestyle etc. We come to the marriage with a different set of values and goals. Oftentimes, we're not fully aware of our own personal core values. And, while some of our values may be in harmony with our partners', other values could be the complete opposite. It's no wonder that financial problems are just the tip of the iceberg. Fights about money conceal much deeper hidden issues between spouses and between family members. With the divorce rate hovering around the 50% mark, how can YOU put safeguards in place now, before it's too late and you too end up just another statistic. Don't let this happen to you. There's a taboo on talking about money There's a universal taboo on talking about money in public! When was the last time you went to a dinner party and someone asked, "Are you saving enough for retirement?" "So, what's the balance on your credit card?" "Do you ever secretly stash money away?" While we believe therapy definitely has its place for certain issues, there are those (especially women) who tend to get "addicted" on some level to seeing their therapist. Healing expert, Dr. Carolyn Myss, talks about therapy like we're getting on a boat and never getting off on the other side. We're not knocking therapy, it's just you have to look at the end RESULTS. How effective is it for you? We definitely recommend using outside professionals to contribute to the health of your marriage. But there is a challenge here that so many couples (and professionals!) overlook. For most every couple, MONEY is a major source of conflict and stress. And if you work with a Counselor, Therapist, Pastor or Minister, while they may be be skilled and trained in the world of relationships and marriage, most likely they are not skilled in how to manage money... let alone build wealth. No. Likely you'd seek some kind of treatment from a trained doctor, alternative healer or specialist. If our teeth hurt, we go to the dentist. If our vision is failing, we go to the optometrist. If we have an aching back, we visit the chiropractor. But, why is it we are so reluctant to bring in oustide professional help when we're having problems in our marriage? Financial planning misses the mark too
Just as working with a marriage expert alone will not help your money problems, working with a financial planner alone will not help your marital (relationship/communication) problems. A financial planner is trained to give you financial advice. He/she is likely not skilled in relationships or may not know about different money personalities and be able to create a plan tailored to both you and your partner's styles.
